Todays saddle blankets
A saddle blanket is the item used for padding between a saddle and the horses back. Before the advent of saddles, early riders started with a simple pad that would eventually be replaced with the saddle.
Today there are almost as many choices in saddle blanket designs and styles as there are saddles. English saddle blankets are called pads, as are most of the western saddle blankets, the only difference is the terminology that have changed over time. The saddle blanket lines available now are shaped to fit the saddle in the case of some English styles and in the western barrel racing styles. It is now possible to find pads that are breathable and therefore cooler on a hard working horses back, and a foam rubber model that is easier on a horse with a sensitive back.
The options in saddle blanket style are almost endless, your best bet it to find someone who can aid you in your search and find the best saddle blanket for you.
