Saddle tree - Foundation of the saddle

When it comes to the conventional saddle, the saddle tree must be considered the backbone. From the earliest models there has always been some kind of saddle tree.

Early trees were designed from solid carved pieces of wood and a lot of today’s saddle makers still follow this tradition, feeling that the early craftsmen had the right idea all along. As technology advanced there became the option of a fiberglass or plastic tree and many riders welcomed the lighter weight option.

There are some saddle makers today that have done away with the saddle tree all together, but it is too soon to tell if this is an idea that is here to stay or just a passing fad. As the horse industry in general, and the saddle making industry in particular, have continued to change and evolve, one of the few constants, has been the saddle tree.
