Cogshall saddle - History of the Cogshall saddle
Between 1880 and 1900 miles city was known as “the saddle city” because of the large concentration of skilled saddle makers. These saddle makers would become some of the most important in the west, virtually setting the standard of design for American saddles. Foremost among these skill saddle makers would be Charles Cogshall, not as a saddle maker but as a business savvy man, with a talent for hiring skilled employees. Thus it was that the Cogshall saddle came to be reknowned and copied by most of the other saddle makers in the west.
August 9, 1909 Coggshall sold his saddlery to two of his employees who renamed it Miles City Saddlery Company, but who kept in place the famous Coggshall Saddle name.
The saddle he designed still bears his name and is still made at Wilson Coggshall Saddlery in Miles City, Montana. Charles Cogshall had left his mark in Miles City, and became a permanent part of Western history.
