Pack saddles - Introduction to pack saddles
Calling pack saddles, saddles may seem like a misnomer, but, in fact a saddle is a piece of equipment placed on a horses back for the purpose of transport, be it human or cargo.
It is a good idea to use pack saddles when setting out on a trek, especially when a lot of supplies are needed. Take the time to familiarize yourself to the fundamentals when it comes to using pack saddles. Common sense and attention to detail can keep you and you horse out of some uncomfortable, and even dangerous situations.
You will find that there are some real differences between conventional saddles and pack saddles, starting with the fact that pack saddles sit farther back on the horse (behind the withers). When loading pack saddles ensure the bags are of equal weight on either side, ideally within 1 kilogram. Be sure to pack the heavier items at the bottom, since too high a load can create side to side movement resulting in discomfort or even injury to the horse.
