Plantation saddles - Built for comfort

Evolving from the english saddle, the plantation saddle was most popular along the Atlantic seaboard plantations, and where gaited horses were bred. The movement of these horses, allowed a rider to cover alot of ground, quickly and in comfort, while using the flat seated plantation saddles.

Plantation saddles had a slightly higher pommel and cantle for better seat postition and security. The saddle often had large saddlebags and stirrups made of iron or brass. While the military of the era used these saddles for a time, it was found that as the rigors of travel caused the horse to lose weight, the plantation saddles caused back soreness, resulting in a change of saddle type to a open slotted model.
