Gaited horse saddles - Form to function
A gaited horse can be most easily be described as a horse that does not trot, these horse are known for their four beated gait, with four separate and distinct footfalls, thus requiring gaited horse saddles. Some of the most well known breed of gaited horse are the Tennesee Walker, Icelandic, Paso Fino, Peruvian, , Rocky Mountain, Kentucky Mountain, Spotted Saddle, Florida Cracker, Racking, Missouri Fox Trotter, a few Morgans, some Saddlebreds, and many Standardbreds.
Because a gaited horse shows such movement in the back and shoulders, the rigid treed saddles often work against the horse’s natural way of going. Riders are now finding themselves looking to the more flexible tree and even treeless saddles to provide the freedom that their horses require.
With the gaited horse gaining in popularity, more saddlemakers are offering their own line of gaited horse saddles. Be careful when shopping for the right gaited horse saddles for your horses, this is not a small investment and should last for years, so take the time to look around and talk to people who are knowledgeable. Just because they are called gaited saddles, does not mean that all will suit your needs, so always take your time and do your homework.
