A mule is not a horse: finding a mule saddle

Mules are a different type of animal. Although a hybrid, sharing the genes of the horse, a mule’s needs are very different. Today's saddle makers are starting to take notice of the popularity of the mule. Some saddle makers are seeing the trend and are designing a specific mule saddle.

Mules have a very different back than the horse. In actual fact they don’t handle themselves, or even move in the same way a horse does. Don’t be fooled into buying just a horse saddle with a britchen attached, ask around for a reliable saddle maker who can build a mule saddle! Make sure that you take the time to find a saddle that was truly designed for the mule, even if it costs more, it will pay off in the end.

Because mules tend to be built a bit “bum-high” the downhill slope requires a custom fitting mule saddle. These special saddles allow the balance of the rider seat to be adjusted accordingly, something that would not be possible with today’s conventional horse saddles.

Although custom mule saddles are not always easy to find, there are some very talented saddle makers out there designing beautiful, functional saddles, especially made for today’s mules. There are even specially designed specialty western mule saddles for the endurance mules that are making themselves known in the sport. Take the time to look around and you’ll find a great saddle maker and a great mule saddle.
