Used horse saddle: How to find a good used horse saddle

When you are in need of a new saddle, but funds are short, don’t think “new” think “newer”. Riders often sell used horse saddles when they out grow them, change horses, or change disciplines. You can find a used horse saddle that is like new, with many years of use still in it.

Local tack stores, the want ads, and the internet are great resources for finding a good used horse saddle. Tack shops often carry used consignment tack for other riders, and may give you a few days to try a saddle out on your horse.

Always have a saddle examined carefully, what may look a like a great deal may in fact be unusable. On the other hand look closely, just because its dirty doesn’t mean it won't clean up beautifully.

If you don’t have the knowledge, or feel unsure about checking a used horse saddle, find someone to help you, you'll find other riders are often happy to help out. The first thing to check is the tree, if the tree is no good, neither is the saddle, they are just too expensive to be replaced.
