Used saddles - how to find a bargain

When you first start out with your new horse you know you need a good saddle, but you’re already feeling the pinch. The truth is, buying old Dobbin is only the tip of the financial iceberg, fortunately, you do have options.

You don’t have to buy a brand new saddle, some riders actually prefer to buy a used saddle, finding the leather softer and letting someone else work through the breaking in period for them. Remember, a well maintained saddle can still have years of life left in it.

When you find a used saddle that suits your purpose, there are several things that you must keep in mind. First and foremost, check the tree, or have someone check it for you. If the tree is damaged, move on to the next saddle – no matter how cheap it is – it’s not worth buying!

Examine the stress points of the used saddle, including the billets and girth or cinch areas, making sure they are in good shape. Finally, and most importantly, once all this criteria is met, you must make sure the saddle fits both you and your horse. If the saddle is the wrong size, no amount of padding can make it fit.
