Saddle repair - restitch or replace?
Saddle repairs can mean anything from minor stitch work, to a complete rebuild from the tree up. With the price of saddle repair ranging from five dollars up to a thousand, it is a big business.
A local shoemaker can take care of minor repairs, but for anything of consequence you should always turn to a professional. It is always recommended to deal with a reputable saddle maker for serious work. Remember a broken tree cannot be repaired, in most cases it must be replaced! It is imperative that any saddle repair done, not diminish the safety of the horse or rider.
Saddle repair done on billets and panel restuffing are common on english saddles, and western saddles often need repair on billets and lining. Remember to get an estimate before you have work done, and take into account the price of the job. Sometimes a good used saddle can be picked up for less than the cost of repairing your old one. Even though you may think of your saddle as an old friend, sometimes a bandaid solution isn’t enough.
There are many talented saddle makers around who seem to work miracles in saddle repair, but take your saddle in and get an estimate first.
