Barrel racing saddles - every little bit helps

Barrel horses are true athletes, they require specially designed barrel racing saddles to compete at the highest levels of the sport. Because of the sport’s popularity, and the increases in prize money, barrel racing saddles change as quickly as the technology develops.

Barrel racing saddles are made to meet the needs of both the horse and the rider. Requiring safety and comfort, these riders need a deeper, preferably half rough out seat, and a higher horn, to provide the rider with extra grip and to help the guide her horse through the turns. Lightweight trees have helped the speed factor, with some riders even opting for the new treeless saddles.

With all the turning and lead changes demanded of a competitive barrel horse ,it is imperative that the horse have complete freedom of movement in the turns, and length of stride in the straight aways. Often the difference between first place and fifth can be in the hundreds of a second, so the weight of the tree and the design of the saddle should always be carefully considered. A good barrel racing saddle is an investment, and with proper care and attention will last for years, so take the time to choose the right one.
