Ranch saddles - built tough

There are no real custom ranch saddles. Essentially a ranch saddle is a heavy duty roping saddle.

Roping saddles are the most common style of western saddle used on a ranch. These “ranch saddles” must have a low fork and cantle, as well as a very strong horn and tree to withstand the extreme stress of roping and ranch work. You’ll quickly find that what you are looking for is a good roping saddle.

It is easy to find good roping saddles, either custom made or off the shelf. Look for recognized and trusted saddle makers, it can make years of difference in the lifetime of your saddle. Ranch saddles must be very tough, as they are the pickup truck of the saddle world, and are abused accordingly. Trying to save money by buying a cheaper saddle will often cost you more in the long run.

As with buying any saddle, the fit to you and your horse is of the utmost importance, if you are unsure, ask for help from someone knowledgeable in the horse industry. Don’t forget to shop around, saddle prices vary from area to area, and with the internet you can check out saddles all over the world.
