Sidesaddles-centuries of evolution
The sidesaddle has been around since medieval times, the original models starting out as a cloth or pad. Obviously the sidesaddle has undergone a lot of changes.
Women would sit completely sideways in the early saddles, which had evolved into something quite like a chair, complete with a footrest called a planchette. These early sidesaddles were anything but functional, with the horse having to be led, and kept to a walk! Eventually these saddles became more functional, even to the point where they could be used for hunting.
By the 19th century, sidesaddles had developed into a style more like the styles of today. Unfortunately although collectable, the older models of sidesaddles are not functional, as they are not up to our safety standards and are not recommended for use.
Specialty saddle makers are finding an enduring interest in sidesaddles, and are still building models today, for the show ring, and for pleasure riders alike.
