Finding the right western saddle

The western saddle comes in many designs, depending on the purpose of the saddle. With interests as varied as barrel racing and roping, it makes sense to choose a western saddle custom built for your sport.

While western pleasure requires a saddle designed for comfort with a lighter weight, speed is not a factor. The western saddle for cutting has a flatter seat, higher forks, and a longer horn to aid the rider during sharp turns. Reining saddles are as close contact as possible, with a shorter horn to allow freedom of hand and rein movement.

Needing a western saddle designed for ranch work, ropers require a stronger tree, rigging, and horn. To withstand the rigors of roping a heavy calf, roping saddles have a low cantle and require a back cinch as well as a front cinch.

No matter what sport you are interested in, there is a western saddle for you. You can choose from an all purpose saddle, or you can find a saddle maker to custom build a top of the line model for your specific interest. Knowing what saddle is best for you is important, make sure to do your research before buying.
