Barrel racing saddles - finding the right tool for the job

Many saddles can be multifunctional, good for anything from trail riding to barrel racing. A beginner barrel racer would do fine starting out with an all purpose saddle, but serious competitors require specialized barrel racing saddle. Barrel racing saddles are available online and at your local tack shop.

Barrel racing saddles are designed with both the horse and rider in mind. The rider must be able to maintain their balance and in no way interfere with the performance of the horse. Barrel racing saddles should allow unrestricted shoulder movement, good length of stride, and allow freedom of movement in the turns.

Riders demand barrel racing saddles with a higher fork, longer horn, wider swells, and the front of the seat is usually raised, ensuring the rider a deeper, more secure seat. Light wood or fibreglass trees are very popular in barrel racing saddles and some competitors have even switched to the new treeless saddle hoping for even more freedom of movement and faster times.

Doing some research before shopping for a saddle makes a big difference. A lot of saddle makers build barrel racing saddles, but your best bet is to find one that specializes. Try to find someone with extensive knowledge of the sport and it will pay off. Search the internet for a large selection of new and used barrel racing saddles.
